A method of preparing a catalyst of the formulan ncomprising:n reacting a compound of the formula (XX 1 ML n L 1 m ) p with a phosphorane ofnthe formulan nwherein: M is Os or Ru; R and R 1 are either the same or different and aren (a) hydrogen, (b) a group selected from C 2 -C 20 alkenyl, C 2 -C 20 alkynyl, C 1 -C 20 nalkyl, aryl, C 1 -C 20 carboxylate, C 2 -C 20 alkoxy, C 2 -C 20 alkenyloxy, C 2 -C 20 alkynyloxy,naryloxy, C 2 -C 20 alkoxycarbonyl, C 1 -C 20 alkylthio, C 1 -C 20 alkylsulfonyl, or C 1 -C 20 nalkylsulfinyl, or (c) one of the groups listed in (b) substituted with C 1 -C 5 alkyl,nhalogen, C 1 -C 5 alkoxy, unsubstituted phenyl, halogen substituted phenyl, C 1 -C 5 alkylnsubstituted phenyl, or C 1 -C 5 alkoxy substituted phenyl; R 4 , R 5 , and R 6 are either the same or different and are each unsubstitutednor substituted hydrocarbon wherein the hydrocarbon is selected from the group consistingnof aryl, C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 alkoxy, and phenoxy and the hydrocarbon substitution is nselected from the group consisting of halogen, C 1 -C 3 alkyl, C 1 -C 3 alkoxy, unsubstitutednphenyl, halogen substituted phenyl, C 1 -C 5 alkyl substituted phenyl, and C 1 -C 5 alkoxynsubstituted phenyl; X and X 1 are either the same or different and are any anionic ligand; L is any neutral electron donor; L 1 is a trialkylphosphine ligand where at least one of the alkyl groups is ansecondary alkyl or a cycloalkyl; n and m are independently 0-4, provided n+m=2, 3 or 4; and p is an integer equal to or greater than 1. |
