The invention relates to a method for producing protoplasts ofncassava or closely related species, which protoplasts are capable ofnregeneration into plants. The method comprises producing friablenembryogenic callus from explants of cassava or closely related species andnisolating protoplasts from said friable embryogenic callus. The inventionnalso concerns protoplasts obtainable by said method. The inventionnfurther relates to a method for transforming such a protoplast of cassavanor closely related species, and transformed protoplasts obtainable thereby.nIn addition, the invention concerns a method for regenerating plants fromnthese protoplasts and a cassava plant or closely related species obtainablenthereby. n Starch isolated from tubers of such cassava plants have annincreased amylopectin content. The starch and a method for isolating itnfrom said plants also forms part of the invention. |
