titleOfInvention | Photoactive copolymer |
abstract | The invention relates to a novel photoactiv copolymer and itsnuse as orientation layers for liquid crystals and in thenconstruction of unstructured and structured optical elements andnmulti-layer systems. The copolymer contains side chainsnincorporating photoreactive groups and simultaneously sidenchains of the general formula I:n nwhereinn the total number of rings, including the number of rings innoptionally present condensed systems is at least two and at mostnsix; and wherein the broken line symbolizes the point of linkage to the polymernmain chain;n A 2 represents an alicyclic ring or a condensed ring systemnincorporating 2-5 rings, in which one or more nonnadjacent CH 2 groups are optionally replaced by oxygen, nwhich is unsubstituted or substituted by fluorine or by anstraight-chain or branched alkyl residue which isnunsubstituted, mono-substituted by cyano or halogeno, ornpoly-substituted by halogeno, having 1 to 18 carbon atomsnand wherein one or more non adjacent CH 2 groups maynindependently be replaced by a group Q, where Qnrepresents -O-, -CO-, -CO-O-, -O-CO-, -Si(CH 3 ) 2 -O-Si(CH 3 ) 2 -,n-NR 2 -, -NR 2 -CO-, -CO-NR 2 -, -NR 2 -CO-O-, -O-CO-NR 2 -, n-NR 2 -CO-NR 2 -, -CH=CH-, -C≡C-, -O-CO-O-, and R 2 nrepresents hydrogen or lower alkyl; A 1 , A 3 each independently of the other represents an aromatic ornalicyclic group which is unsubstituted or substituted bynfluorine, chlorine, cyano or by a cyclic, straight-chainnor branched alkyl residue which is unsubstituted, mono-substitutednby cyano or halogeno, or poly-substituted bynhalogeno, having 1 to 18 carbon atoms and wherein one ornmore non adjacent CH 2 groups may independently benreplaced by Q, wherein Q and R 2 have the meaning givennabove, with the proviso that -CH=CH-, -C≡C- are not innconjugation with aromatic rings. |
