abstract A method and apparatus for assessing tissue perfusion of a patient. Thenapparatus includes a probe (12) for contacting the mucosa tissue in the uppernrespiratory/digestive tract of the patient (10), and a sensor (30) coupled to thenprobe (12) for directly detecting a pH measurement of the mucosa tissue andnfor generating an electrical signal in response to the detected pHnmeasurement. n For the method of the invention, a probe (12) capable of measuring pH isnprovided. The probe (12) is placed in contact with the mucosa tissue in thenupper respiratory/digestive tract of the patient. A pH measurement of thenmucosa tissue is obtained. The pH measurement is converted into annindicator to a clinician representing a level of tissue perfusion.
