The invention relates to automated andnsemiautomated apparatuses and methods for controlled volume and precise placementnof substances on substrates. Combinations of applicator tips, applicator tipnassemblies, applicator reservoirs, applicator holders and movable racks precisely andnaccurately place samples and testing chemicals on substrates. Applicator tipsnparticularly useful for dunk transfer and deposit processes and for carrying substancesnare disclosed. Apparatuses for precisely moving applicator holders, applicatornreservoirs and tips are disclosed. The methods and apparatuses also have features fornpre-loading substances on applicators and applicator reservoirs and preciselyndelivering the preloaded substances to substrates.
