abstract The invention relates to the use of acetalized vinyl alcohol polymers having a molecular weight Mw of> 100,000 as thickeners, the thickeners being obtained by acetalization of partially or fully hydrolyzed vinyl acetate homopolymers or of partially or fully hydrolyzed vinyl acetate copolymers which, in addition to vinyl acetate units Contain comonomer units which are derived from one or more comonomers from the group comprising 1-alkyl vinyl esters with C 1 -C 5 -alkyl radicals of C 1 -C 5 -carboxylic acids, allyl esters, vinyl esters of alpha-branched carboxylic acids with 5 to 12 C. -Atoms, acrylic acid and methacrylic acid esters of C 1 - to C 18 alcohols.
