A process for producing a polycarboxylic acidnwhich comprises performing liquid phase oxidation ofnpolyalkyl-substituted aromatic aldehyde and/or oxidenderivative of polyalkyl-substituted aromatic aldehyde asnraw material for oxidation with molecular oxygen at twonstages in water solvent in the presence of a catalystncomprising bromine or both bromine and a heavy metal(s)nat a temperature of 180 to 280 °C , thereby producingntrimellitic acid or pyromellitic acid, wherein saidnliquid phase oxidation is performed in a continuousnoperation at the first stage and in a continuousnoperation or in a batch operation at the second stagenand a total amount of bromine in said catalyst isndivided to add separately at each the first stage andnthe second stage. |
