abstract |
In a process of separating a liquid samplenhaving phase portions of different densities byncentrifugal separation, a phase separator containernis employed. The phase separator container comprisesna housing having concentric inner and outerncylindrical walls defining a longitudinal axis and antop wall and further a piston body constituting anbottom wall of the housing. The piston body definesntogether with the outer cylindrical wall, the innerncylindrical wall and the top wall, an annular chambernfor receiving the liquid sample. The piston body isndisplaceable within the annular chamber for drainingna phase portion separated from the liquid samplenthrough a drain conduit means communicating with thenannular chamber. The phase separation chambernfurther comprises a reaction chamber to which thenphase portions exposed from the annular chamber isnprocessed. The apparatus further includes a liquidnsupply means for supplying the liquid sample to thenannular chamber, a motor means for rotating the phasenseparation container round its longitudinal axis at anrotational speed causing a separation of the liquidnsample into the phase portions, and an actuator meansnfor displacing the piston body within the annularnchamber. |
