abstract A hemicyanine dye of formula (1) and an optical recording medium using thenhemicyanine dye as an optical recording medium are provided:n n   wherein Z is a benzene ring, naphthalene ring or anthracene ring; X 1 is S,nO, Se, NR or C(CH 3 ) 2 ; X 2 is S, NR or O, where R is hydrogen or an alkyl group ofn1 to 5 carbon atoms; R 1 is hydrogen, halogen atoms, an alkyl group of 1 to 3ncarbon atoms or a nitro group; each of R 2 and R 5 is an alkyl group of 1 to 5 carbonnatoms; each of R 3 and R 4 is hydrogen, an hydroxy group, an alkyl group of 1 to 4ncarbon atoms, a halogen atom or a halide; Y is Cl, Br, I, CIO 4 , BF 4 , BrO 4 , PF 6 ,nCH 3 SO 3 , CF 3 SO 3 , 4-CH 3 C 6 H 4 SO 3 , C 6 H 5 SO 3 , 6-SO 3 C 10 H 6 SO 3 or HSO 4; n is anninteger of 0-2; and m is an integer of 1-2. The hemicyanine dye having formula (1)nabove is easy to synthesize with high yield. Thus, use of the hemicyanind dye asnan optical recording medium is advantageous in terms of the manufacturing costs.nAn optical recording medium using the hemicyanine dye has improved recordingncharacteristics in terms of jitter and modulation factor.
