Hinged thermoplastic-fabric reinforced structural member, profile and methods therefore |
abstract |
Useful hinged, structural members and profiles are disclosed comprisingnthermoplastic-reinforcing fabric composite materials. The hinged members andnprofiles (100) have at least two rigid areas of thermoplastic-fabric composite joined on ancommon fabric through flexible, hinged regions (107). The hinged regions canncomprise fabric free of any thermoplastic composite forming material ornalternatively can be coated with flexible materials on one or both sides of thenfabric. The invention extends to co-extrusion methods wherein thermoplasticnmaterials are applied to pre-determined portions of the fabric (103) under pressure sonthat the thermoplastic coats (106), and preferably wets, fibers of the reinforcing fabric.nThe structural members thus extruded are formed into useful lengths and readilynconverted into complex profiles by simple bending at the hinged regions. In thisnway, complex profiles that would be difficult to produce by conventional extrusionnprocesses and bulky to ship can be easily made at the job site. |
