titleOfInvention Improved scanners for reading near infrared fluorescent marks
abstract An apparatus for detecting an invisible, nearninfrared fluorescing mark disposed on a backgroundncomprises: an excitation source for exciting the mark, nthe source having sufficient power to provide anfluorescent signal from a mark situated on a leastnreflective portion of the background; signal detectingnmeans for detecting the fluorescent signal from thenmark; and power modulating means for varying the powernbetween zero and the maximal power level of thenexcitation source, which is preferably a laser, in anmanner effective to produce a decodable fluorescentnsignal from a mark disposed on any portion of thenbackground. A process for decoding an invisible markncomprising a near infrared fluorescing materialncomprises: providing at least one invisible, nearninfrared fluorescing mark disposed on at least onenportion of a background; exciting the mark with a lasernhaving a maximal power level sufficient to provide anfluorescent signal from the mark when it is disposed onna least reflective portion of the background; andndetecting the fluorescent signal and concurrentlynvarying the power of the laser between zero and itsnmaximal power, thereby obtaining a decodable fluorescentnsignal at a laser power level between zero and thenmaximal of a mark disposed on any portion of thenbackground.
