titleOfInvention | Mass spectrometer and method with improved ion transmission |
abstract | In a mass spectrometer system, ions travel throughnan orifice (26) in an inlet plate (28) into a firstnvacuum chamber (30) containing AC-only rods (32), andnthen through an orifice (34) into a second vacuum chambern(38) containing a standard quadrupole (40). The secondnvacuum chamber is held at low pressure, e.g. .02nmillitorr or less, but the product of the pressure in thenfirst chamber times the length of the AC-only rods isnheld above 2.25 X 10 -2 torr cm, preferably between 6 X 10 -2 nand 15 X 10 -2 torr cm, and the DC voltage between theninlet plate and the AC-only rods is kept low, e.g.nbetween 1 and 30 volts, preferably between 1 and 10nvolts. This produces a large enhancement in ion signal, nwith less focussing aberration and better sensitivity atnhigh masses, and also allows the use of smaller, cheapernpumps so the system can be more easily transportable. |
