titleOfInvention "Spare parts" for use in ophthalmic surgical procedures
abstract Artificial ophthalmic "spare parts" which are made ofnbiocompatible material and may be implanted by a surgeonneither in the region of the ciliary sulcus or in the residualnnatural capsular bag of a patient's eye following cataractnsurgery so as to serve as a receptacle for an intraocularnlens or other optical or mechanical device, may have thenform of an either anteriorly incomplete and posteriorlyncomplete capsular bag-like structure with a generally toroidalnequatorial region, or the form of a both anteriorlynand posteriorly incomplete generally toroidally ring-shapedncapsular bag-like structure, the interior space of thentoroidal part of the structure between the anterior andnposterior walls constituting a compartment into which annoptical or other device may be inserted. Such a capsularnbag-like structure can also serve to provide an enhancedncapability of inhibiting posterior capsular opacification innthe residual natural capsular bag, and has a series ofnstiff but flexible external spines for fixating thenstructure to the ciliary body and selectively can havena circumferentially resiliently compressible splitnwasher-like configuration, an interior circumferentialnrib dividing the compartment into two subcompartments,na visually perceptible series of degree markings on atnleast one of the anterior and posterior walls tonfacilitate orientation of the optical or other devicesnbeing inserted into the structure.
