An infrared producing illuminant composition comprising:n (a) from 40% to 90% by weight of an oxidiser which producesninfrared radiation upon burning, (b) from 1% to 35% by weight binder, and (c) from 5% to 40% by weight organic fuel, distinct from thenbinder, the fuel comprising a compound having at least one 3 to 6-memberednheterocyclic ring and containing 1 to 4 oxygen atoms, the ratio ofninfrared radiation to visible radiation is not less than 6.0 and thenburn rate of the composition is not less than 0.075cm/s, nwherein the oxidizer is selected from the group consisting ofnpotassium nitrate, caesium nitrate, rubidium nitrate and combinationsnthereof, and nwherein the fuel comprises a member selected from the groupnconsisting of tetrazoles, bitetrazoles, triazoles, imidazoles, oxazole,npyrazole, pyrroline, pyrrolinidene, pyridine and pyrimidine. |
