An organic electroluminescent device is disclosednwhich has a simple constitution, is excellent in devicenstability and emission efficiency, and attains high brightness.nThe organic electroluminescent device comprises an organicnelectroluminescent element (2) and a polarized-lightnscattering film (1) which comprises a light-transmitting resinn(11) and dispersedly contained therein minute regions (12)ndiffering from the light-transmitting resin in birefringentncharacteristics and in which the difference in refractive indexnbetween the minute regions and the light-transmitting resinnin the axis direction in which a linearly polarized light hasna maximum transmittance, Δn 1 , is smaller than 0.03 and thatnin a direction perpendicular to the Δn 1 direction, Δn 2 , is fromn0.03 to 0.5, the light produced by the organicnelectroluminescent element being emitted from the devicenthrough the polarized-light scattering film. Also disclosednare: a polarizing surface light source which comprises thenorganic electroluminescent device and which has annilluminating planar surface and emits a polarized light; andna liquid-crystal display which comprises the polarizingnsurface light source and a liquid-crystal cell disposed on thenlight emission side of the light source. |
