titleOfInvention Diamond abrasive particles and method for preparing the same
abstract The invention has the principal object of providing a loose mass of minutenabrasive diamond particles and an effective method for producing the same. Thendiamond particles meet at the same time these requirements for a slurry abrasivento be used in machining processes: (1) efficient removal of the work material perntime, (2) minimized finished surface roughness, and (3) least of the diamondnparticles left as sticking on the surface of rather soft work material. n The diamond particles of the invention have a nominal size of 5 µm or lessnby D50 measurement and comprise an explicit thermal effect on the crystalnstructure due to a heat treatment at a temperature at least of 1000° C. Furthernthey are deposited on the surfaces with non-diamond carbon which amountsntotally to 0.5%, at least, by weight relative to the whole diamond particles. Thenmethod of the invention is in particular adapted for producing the diamondnabrasive particles of modified properties. The method comprises: providingndiamond particles of a D50 average particle size of 50 nm or greater andnsubjecting said diamond particles to a heat treatment at a temperature at least ofn1000° C either in a non-oxidizing atmosphere or in a vacuum, and converting innpart said diamond to non-diamond carbon.
