A system for converting PM in an exhaust gas, which system comprises anstoichiometrically-operated engine and an exhaust system including a plasma generator fornconverting water vapour in the exhaust gas into an oxidant and a filter downstream of the plasmangenerator. The use of plasma-treated water vapour as an oxidant to convert particulate mattern(PM) trapped on a filter disposed in an exhaust system, and/or to oxidise NO and/or N 2 to NO 2 ,nwhich water vapour, PM, NO and N 2 is present in an exhaust gas of a stoichiometrically-operatedngasoline engine, wherein the NO 2 is then used to combust the PM. Experimentally, thenconversion of a gaseous hydrocarbon using a plasma with and without water vapour present cannbe followed using mass spectrometry. |
