abstract The present invention relates to a novel liquidncrystalline compound represented by Formula (1):n nwherein R represents an alkyl group having 1 to 10 carbonnatoms or a fluoroalkyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms,nand R' represents an alkyl group having 1 to 10 carbonnatoms, a fluoroalkyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms, anfluorine atom, a chlorine atom, a bromine atom or a cyanongroup, in which any methylene groups which are not adjacentnto each other in these alkyl groups and any methylene groupsnand/or fluoromethylene groups which are not adjacent to eachnother in the fluoroalkyl groups may be substituted withnoxygen atoms, sulfur atoms or -CH=CH-; the rings A 1 , A 2 , A 3 nand A 4 each independently represent 1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylenenin which 1 to 2 hydrogen atoms may be substitutednwith fluorine atoms, dioxane-2,5-diyl, pyrimidine-2,5-diyl,npyridine-2,5-diyl, piperidine-1,4-diyl or 1-sila-1,4-cyclohexylene;nB 1 , B 2 , B 3 , B 4 and B 5 each independentlynrepresent a single bond, -CH 2 CH 2 -, -CH=CH-, -OCH 2 -, -CH 2 O-,n-(CH 2 ) 4 -, -OCO- or -COO-; l, m, n and p each independentlynrepresent 0 or 1; and Z represents one group selected fromnthe following moieties (I) to (V):n nprovided that nwhen Z is the moiety (II), l + m + n + p > 0, and the ringsnA 1 , A 2 , A 3 and A 4 each independently represent 1,4-phenylenenin which 1 to 2 hydrogen atoms are substituted with fluorinenatoms, pyrimidine-2,5-diyl, pyridine-2,5-diyl, piperidine-1,4-diylnor 1-sila-1,4-cyclohexylene; and that when Z is thenmoiety (III) and l = m = n = p = 0, R is an alkyl group, andnR' is not a fluorine atom or a cyano group when B 5 is ansingle bond. The present invention further relates to anliquid crystal composition comprising the above compound andna liquid crystal display element comprising the abovencomposition. n The liquid crystalline compound of the presentninvention has a particularly large dielectric anisotropy andnrefractive anisotropy and a low viscosity and is excellentnin a low temperature compatibility.
