titleOfInvention | Steerable unitary infusion catheter/guide wire incorporating detachable infusion port assembly |
abstract | A steerable infusion catheter/guide wire formed by an assembly of three primary segments, namely, a detachable infusion port segment (28), a unitary elongated steerable metallic cannula segment (4) symmetrical about a longitudinal axis, having the characteristics of flexibility, kink resistance, super-elasticity, and shape memory, and a distal flexible segment (8) that may be selectively shaped into a J-shape, and optionally incorporating a dispersion aperture or port that is axially aligned with the longitudinal axis of the catheter/guide wire, or dispersion apertures having axes transverse to the longitudinal axis of the catheter/guide wire. The detachable infusion port segment comprises a three part subassembly selectively detachably and sealingly engaging the outer periphery of the elongated unitary cannula segment adjacent a proximal end thereof to enable selective rotation of the cannula and the flexible distal segment attached thereto to facilitate navigation of the flexible distal segment through tortuous vasculature and facilitate the injection of fluid, and/or fluid-like substances to a tissue site, or effect the recovery therefrom of fluid or fluid-like substances. |
