Antimicrobial contact lens |
abstract |
The present invention provides antimicrobial ocular lenses made from a polymericnmaterial that contains an inorganic antimicrobial agent in order to make the lens resistant tonmicrobial growth in the body or on the surface of the lens. In one embodiment the inorganicnantimicrobial agent is a zeolite which contains antimicrobial metal ions. Lenses of the inventionnprevent microbial contamination and growth thereon by incorporating the inorganic antimicrobialnagent into the lens material. A lens of the invention does not leach the antimicrobial agent intonthe eye during use or into ophthalmic solution in which it may be stored, and is safe (non-toxic)nfor in vivo use. Furthermore, substantial antimicrobial properties are not imparted to thensolution, nor are the characteristics of ophthalmic solutions altered. As a result, all types ofnophthalmic solutions can be used safely with a contact lens of the invention. Another advantagenof the antimicrobial agent of the invention is that it does not cause substantial discoloration of thenlens over time. In another aspect, the invention provides a method of killing or reducingnmicrobes on a contact lens made from a polymeric material by adding an antimicrobial-effectivenamount of an inorganic antimicrobial agent to the polymeric material. |
