abstract The invention relates to the use of mannose, or of a mannose-containing sugar which releases mannose in the gastro-intestinal tract, for combating protein loss enteropathy or phosphomannose isomerase deficiency. Protein loss enteropathy is characterised by chronic diarrhoea, protein loss and failure to grow. The disease is believed to be due to a phosphomannose isomerase deficiency, and can be cured by administering mannose. The mannose is dissolved in water and/or incorporated in a pharmaceutical agent or food for the purpose of administration.
