A method of preparing pentafluoroethane whereinnchlorine-containing carbon compounds are fluorinated in thenpresence of chromium catalysts that are in an amorphousnstate and wherein the main component is chromium compoundsnwith the addition of at least one metal element selectednfrom the group composed of indium, gallium, cobalt, nickel,nzinc and aluminum and the average valence of the chromiumnin said chromium compounds is not less than +3.5 but notnmore than +5.0. And said chromium catalysts and anpreparation method thereof. n A method of preparing pentafluoroethane wherein the totalnyield of chlorofluoroethane by-products can be decreasednwithout significantly deteriorating the generationnactivity of the pentafluoroethane and compounds which cannbe recycled in the reaction system.
