abstract A non-woven fabric having such a structure that finenfibers having a small fineness are entangled with one anothernand a sheet obtained by impregnating the non-woven fabric withnan elastic polymer satisfy the following requirements:n the fine fibers should be obtained by splitting anstrippable and splittable composite short fiber comprisingnat least two components; the fine fibers should have anmonofilament size of 0.01 to 0.5 denier; the fine fibers shouldnform a fine non-woven fabric structure that they are entanglednwith one another at random; the apparent density should ben0.18 to 0.45 g/cm 3 ; the average area of spaces between fibersnin the cross section of the non-woven fabric measured by thenimage analysis of an electron scanning microscope should ben70 to 250 µm 2 ; and the non-woven fabric should have such anuniform structure that the standard deviation of the area ofna space between fibers in the cross section of the non-wovennfabric measured by the image analysis of the electron scanningnmicroscope is 200 to 600 µm 2 . n The non-woven fabric and sheet are advantageously usednas a substrate for artificial leather.
