abstract A lithium ion electrochemical cell having highncharge/discharge capacity, long cycle life and exhibiting anreduced first cycle irreversible capacity, is described. Thenstated benefits are realized by the addition of at least onensulfite additive to an electrolyte comprising an alkali metalnsalt dissolved in a solvent mixture that includes ethylenencarbonate, dimethyl carbonate, ethylmethyl carbonate andndiethyl carbonate. The preferred additive is an allyl or benzyl sulfitencompound.
