titleOfInvention Steering of internet access to sponsors
abstract This invention provides an Internet Access Provider (IAP)na simple mechanism to steer users to given Internet services, nsuch as the Web pages, of sponsors. The mechanismnallows a sponsor to grant a dial-in user unlimited accessnto the Internet after the user has first accessed itsnInternet services. The invention is thus important for anynIAP that wants to receive income from sponsors by steeringnInternet users to their services. In the ultimate case, nan IAP could receive all its income from sponsors and thusnbe able to offer the Internet access for free. n The key characteristics of the present invention is that anuser is steered to the Internet services of a sponsor basednon a sponsor specific called telephone number or a sponsornspecific login name. The IAP does not need tonuniquely identify the user and therefore no user specificnPINs are needed. Sponsors can simply promote their offersnby publicly advertising their sponsor specific Internetnaccess telephone numbers or login names. The usernregistration process (if any) and the determination of whennunlimited access should be granted is handled by thensponsor. The functions of the IAP are sponsor independentnand the amount of information that needs to be transferednbetween the sponsor and the IAP is minimized.
