A process for the colouration of a substrate comprisesn (1) applying thereto in an aqueous medium each ofn (i) a water soluble dye having at least twonelectrophilic groups each capable of reactionnwith a respective amino group and (ii) a nucleophilic agent having a molecular weightnbelow 600 and at least two aliphatic amino groupsnso as to be thereby capable of reaction with thensaid water-soluble dye at a pH and temperature atnwhich the electrophilic groups and amino groupsnare capable of reaction with one another but thendye does not react to a significant extent withnthe substrate before it reacts with thennucleophilic agent, (2) allowing the said dye and nucleophilic agent tonreact with one another and thereafter (3) increasing at least one of the pH and temperaturento exhaust the dye onto the substrate, nthe said nucleophilic agent being selected from thenfollowing species:n (a) a nucleophilic agent having two aliphatic primarynamino groups and no secondary aliphatic aminongroups; (b) a nucleophilic agent having three aliphaticnprimary amino groups and no secondary aliphaticnamino groups; (C) a nucleophilic agent having one aliphatic primarynamino group and one secondary aliphatic aminongroup; (d) a nucleophilic agent having two aliphatic primarynamino groups and one aliphatic secondary aminongroup; and (e) a nucleophilic agent having at least twonaliphatic secondary amino groups selected fromnHO(CH 2 CH 2 NH) 2 CH 2 CH 2 OH, HO 2 CCH 2 NHCH 2 CH 2 NHCH 2 CO 2 H,nPhCH 2 NHCH 2 CH 2 NHCH 2 Ph, (-NHCH 2 CH 2 -) 3,4 or 5, piperazine,n2-methylpiperazine, 2,5- and 2,6-dimethylpiperazine,nH 2 N(CH 2 CH 2 NH) n H wherein n isn3,4 or 5, CH 3 NHCH 2 CH 2 NHCH 3 , (-NHCH 2 CH 2 CH 2 -) 4 ,n1,4,7,10,13-(6-hexaazacyclooctadecane),n(CH 3 O) 3 Si(CH 2 CH 2 NH) 2 CH 2 CH 2 CO 2 CH 3 andn(CH 3 O) 3 Si(CH 2 CH 2 NH) 2 CH 2 CH 2 NH 2 . |
