abstract An industrially advantageous process for producingncyanobenzyl compounds under mild conditions from relativelyneasily available cyanobenzylamine having a cyano group on thenbenzene ring or a compound thereof which is ring-substitutednwith a chlorine atom, a fluorine atom, etc. The process fornproducing a cyanobenzyl compound includes transforming annaminomethyl group of a cyanobenzylamine compound into anhydroxymethyl group, a halogenomethyl group, or annacyloxymethyl group without causing damage to a cyano groupnon the benzene ring. The transformation may be carried outnby use of nitrosonium ions.
