abstract Disclosed is a process for the production of maleicnanhydride, which comprises: reacting a hydrocarbon with annoxygen-containing gas in the presence of a catalyst;nrecovering maleic anhydride from the reaction gas;nrecovering unreacted hydrocarbon from the remaining gas;nand returning the hydrocarbon thus recovered to the reactornfor re-use, wherein said reaction is effected under thenconditions such that the hydrocarbon concentration X (vol%)nand oxygen concentration Y (vol%) in all the gases to benfed into the reactor, the hydrocarbon conversion Z (%) innthe reactor and the oxygen concentration W (vol%) in allnthe effluent gases from the reactor satisfy the followingnrelationships:n Y ≥ 20, X + Y ≤ 70, 1 ≤ Y/X ≤ 5, and 20(Y - 10)/X ≤ Z ≤ 25Y/X or 2 ≤ W ≤ 10, nand/or wherein the concentration of maleic anhydride in the reaction gasnis not less than 2 vol% and the oxygen concentration A (vol%),nhydrocarbon concentration B (vol%) and carbon monoxide concentration Cn(vol%) in the exhaust gas after recovering unreacted hydrocarbon at thenhydrocarbon recovering step satisfy the following requirements:n D = C/(B + C), E = 100A/(100 - B - C), and 0 < α < 10, in which α = - 10.51 + 51.22D - 35.35D 2 - E.
