A novel oxidation product derived from a carbohydrate containing 1,2-dihydroxyethylenengroups in its repeating units, can be obtained by atnleast partially oxidising the 1,2-dihydroxyethylene groups of thencarbohydrate to dialdehyde groups, and oxidising a part of the aldehydengroups to carboxylic acid groups. The oxidation product has a regularnstructure with alternating aldehyde groups and carboxyl groups in anratio of about 1:1. It can be further transformed to an amino-substitutednoxidation product by reductive amination of at least a partnof the remaining aldehyde groups. |
