abstract A process for producing a cyanobenzoic acidncompound, a cyanobenzamide compound, an alkylncyanobenzoate compound, and a cyanobenzoyl chloridencompound, which are useful intermediates for a variety ofnchemicals such as pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, liquidncrystals, and monomers for functional polymers. Onennitrile group of an easily available phthalonitrilencompound is selectively hydrolyzed to thereby produce ancyanobenzamide compound with high selectivity and yield.nThe cyanobenzamide compound thus-produced is transformednunder acidic conditions into a cyanobenzoic acid compoundnand a cyanobenzoate ester compound without the cyanongroup of the benzene ring being damaged.
