abstract An X-ray positioning apparatus for a C-arm device (10)nthat is "out of balance" in that a center of mass (40) ofnthe rotatable structure resides below an axis ofnlateral rotation (30) of the C-arm (12). The positioningnapparatus includes a conventional L-arm support (23) fornholding the C-arm (12) thereon, wherein a torsionalnresistance device is disposed inside the L-arm (23). Thentorsional resistance device may be a gas spring (52), fornexample, pivotally attached at one end to a fixednlocation (54) on a ground support such as a conventionalnbase unit (24), and attached at an opposing end to the L-armnby a ball joint (56). The pivotal attachment (54) of thengas spring resides below the axis of lateral rotation (30)nto thereby cause the gas spring (52) to produce a torsionalnforce about the axis of lateral rotation (30) that isnopposite in direction to torsional loads produced bynforce of gravity when the center of mass (40) of thenrotatable structure and the axis of lateral rotation (30)nare not in vertical alignment.
