abstract |
A method and a burner for manufacturing silica-containing soot isndisclosed. The method includes mixing a liquid silicon-containing feedstocknand a gas in a mixing chamber (22) to provide anmixture and ejecting the liquid-gas mixture from an orifice into ancombustion site to convert the silica-containing feedstock into silica containingnsoot. The burner includes a plurality of channels for delivering a gas tonprovide a flame, an effervescent atomizer comprising a mixingnchamber (22) for atomizing a liquid, silicon-containingnfeedstock and a hood (termed "rail" (28))nfor guiding the atomized liquid, silicon-containingnfeedstock into the burner flame. The method and burner can benused to produce silica-containing articles such as high purity fused silicanoptical members and waveguides. |
