titleOfInvention Improved nitration process
abstract In the production of nitrated aromatic compounds by reacting an aromatic compound with nitric and sulfuric acids, the NOx gases produced are contacted with water to produce weak nitric acid which is recycled to the process. Aromatic compounds are continuously nitrated by: (a) introducing the aromatic compound, nitric acid and sulfuric acid into a nitrator; (b) reacting under controlled conditions to produce a nitrated aromatic compound and NOx gases; (c) separating the NOx gases; (d) contacting the gases with essentially pure water under an elevated pressure to form weak nitric acid; and (e) recycling the nitric acid for reuse in the process. An independent claim is also included for a nitration system comprising a nitrator including: (i) feeds for aromatic compound, sulfuric acid and nitric acid; (ii) a separator for separating spent sulfuric acid from the nitrated compound; (iii) a separator for NOx gases; and (iv) a contactor for contacting these gases with water.
