abstract An organic EL device has a hole injecting electrode, annelectron injecting electrode, at least one organic layernbetween the electrodes, and an inorganic insulating holeninjecting and transporting layer between the hole injectingnelectrode and the organic layer. The inorganic insulatingnhole injecting and transporting layer contains silicon oxidenand/or germanium oxide as a main component, the mainncomponent being represented by (Si 1-x Ge x )O y wherein 0 ≦ x ≦n1 and 1.8 ≦ y ≦ 2.5, and further contains 0.01 to 2% bynweight of at least one element selected from among Ar, Kr,nXe, and Ne. The device has the advantages of both organicnand inorganic materials, a long lifetime, improvednefficiency, low operating voltage, and low cost, and cannprovide a high luminance of light emission when applied tondisplays of the time-division driving mode, and realizenlarge screen, high definition displays.
