titleOfInvention A method for determining the presence of water in materials
abstract An improved process for determining the presence of water inna material is disclosed. A set of electrodes (36,38) is placed on thensurface of a layer of the material (32) being monitored, and an electricnfield is established therebetween (40,42). The phase angle for thenelectric field at a pre-selected frequency is measured, and comparednwith a predetermined phase angle for a dry portion of the material. Ansignificant difference between the phase angle for the material beingnmonitored and the predetermined phase angle is indicative of thenpresence of water in the material. The material being monitored maynbe an electrical insulating material, e.g., for conductive components innwater-cooled electrical generators. Electrical generators monitored innthis manner are also within the scope of this disclosure.
