The invention relates to a process for the oxidation of a reaction gas in the presence of a catalyst solution, in which a) the reaction gas is oxidized in a reactor in the presence of the catalyst solution, a reaction mixture being formed which contains droplets of the catalyst solution and which b) passes into a first separator and in this droplet of the catalyst solution is removed from the reaction mixture and in which one c) passing the remaining reaction mixture from the first separator into a washing apparatus and removing the oxidation product from the reaction mixture, characterized in that one d) passing the reaction mixture from the first separator through a second separator, which is connected downstream of the first separator and upstream of the washing apparatus, and removes residual catalyst solution from the reaction mixture in the second separator.
