titleOfInvention Treatment of lignocellulosic material
abstract A method of treating subdivided or particulate lignocellulosic material with steam at temperature and a pressure high enough and for a time sufficient to effect decomposition and hydrolysis of hemicellulose and/or cellulose into water soluble resin material including pentose and hexose sugars, sugar polymers, furfural, hydroxymethyl furfural, dehydrated carbohydrates and organic acids, characterized in that the steam treatment is effected, at least in part of its duration, in the presence of an acidic catalyst such as sulfuric acid, sulfur dioxide or ammonium sulfate.
