abstract A reaction between 6-bromo-2-naphthol and dimethyl sulfate is conducted in the presence of substantially stoichiometric amounts of sodium hydroxide and water and in an organic solvent to prevent the formation of sodium methyl sulfate while obtaining high yields of product in the preparation of 6-bromo-2-methoxynaphthalene and its derivatives, such as nabumetone and naproxen.
