The present invention relates to a process for preparing epoxy-acrylicnhybrid emulsions having an polyepoxide content of up to 95% based on thentotal weight of resin solids in the emulsion. The process involves (I)ndissolving a polyepoxide with at least one acrylate monomer in the presencenof water and a surfactant to form a mixture; (II) microfluidizing ornhomogenizing the mixture in a microfluidizer or homogenizer having anchamber pressure of from about 6,000 psi to about 15,000 psi to form a pre-emulsion;nand (III) polymerizing the pre-emulsion in the presence of a freenradical polymerization catalyst. The epoxy-acrylic hybrid emulsion can benformulated into solvent-free wood coatings, direct-to-metal coatings and paint. |
