abstract | An inflation apparatus that includes at least twoninflators for selected use in inflating an air bag isndisclosed. In one embodiment, the two inflators include anmicro hybrid inflator and a pyrotechnic inflator. The micronhybrid inflator includes a pressurized medium having oxygennthat contributes to the inflation gases that fill theninflatable. The pyrotechnic inflator is essentially free ofnany such stored gas. Both inflators include a fuel-rich gasngenerating material. In another embodiment, instead of anmicro hybrid inflator, another pyrotechnic inflator isnutilized that includes an oxygen-rich gas generating material.nIn still another embodiment, a fluid fuel acts as a source ofnoxygen for the fuel-rich gas generating material of thenpyrotechnic inflator. When both inflators of the dualninflation apparatus are activated, the oxygen gas that isnpresent is used in further combusting products of combustionnfrom the pyrotechnic inflator having the fuel-rich gasngenerating material. Preferably, activation of each inflatorndepends upon whether the vehicle collision that results in airnbag activation is low impact or high impact. In at least onenembodiment, the two inflators can be affixed to a supportnassembly with a desired arrangement of the inflators tonprovide a low profile and reduced space usage by the inflationnapparatus. |
