titleOfInvention Spring chuck
abstract A chuck (10) including a body (16) and jaws (18) slidably positioned in angled passageways (30) formed in the body (16). The chuck (10) further includes a nut (60) rotatably mounted relative to the body (16) and in engagement with threads (34) on the jaws (18). A generally cylindrical sleeve (12) is disposed in driving arrangement with the nut (60) and overlying the nose section (56) of the body (16) so that when the sleeve (12) is rotated with respect to the body (16), the jaws (18) will be moved thereby to grip the shaft of a tool. A spring member (80) is biased to engage the sleeve (12) and is disposed selectively rotatably with respect to the nut (60). When the nut (60) is tightened, the spring member (80) becomes locked to the body (16), which has an engagement portion (17) that facilitates this locking relationship. When so locked, the nut (60) is restrained from loosening during vibration of the chuck (10) in use.
