abstract |
A method and apparatus for detecting the presencenof a ground leakage path (39) in an electric motornsystem including an alternating current (ac) electricnmotor (40) coupled for receiving electric power from answitching inverter (27) of the type having, for eachnphase of the motor, a pair of serially connectednelectronic switching devices connected betweennrelatively positive and negative direct current (dc)nvoltage buses (24,25) with the switching devices beingnalternately gated into and out of conduction fornproviding switched electric power to the motor. Theninverter includes a current detector (29) forndetecting current in the relatively negative voltagenbus. The method comprises initially applying a gatingnpulse each time the motor is energized to thenswitching device (34, 36, 38) of each phase connectednto the negative voltage bus and identifying a groundnleakage path when such gating pulse produces currentnat the current detector. Preferably, the first gatingnpulse is of very short time duration and the processnof applying gating pulses is repeated for each of anplurality of continuously increasing pulse widthsnuntil a selected maximum width is attained withoutngenerating current. Thereafter, the motor is startednin a conventional manner. |
