abstract | The production of aromatic tricarboxylic acids like trimellitic acid, is enhanced by conducting an improved catalytic liquid phase oxidation of a trimethyl substituted aromatic hydrocarbon, as pseudocumene, continuously in at least three stages of reaction in series. The use as promoter of a ketone or an aldehyde at the first stage of reaction and of bromine at the following stages, in combination with the use of oxygen as oxidizing medium, allows to reduce substantially the global consumption of metal catalysts (Co, Mn, Zr, Ce) and to achieve high values of conversion and of selectivity. |
