Ion exchange membrane |
abstract |
The present invention is directed to an ion exchangenmembrane comprising a integrally reinforced polymericnfilm grafted with an aromatic moiety having at least onenaromatic ring substituted with an ion exchange group.nThe ion exchange group can be an anion exchange group orna cation exchange group. n The present invention is further directed to anmethod for preparing an ion exchange membrane whichninvolves contacting an integrally reinforced polymericnfilm with an aromatic monomer substituted with at leastnone aromatic ring and grafting the aromatic monomer tonthe integrally reinforced film. An ion exchange group isnthen introduced to the aromatic ring to provide an ionnexchange membrane. Optionally, the aromatic monomer maynpossess an aromatic ring substituted with ion exchangengroup or derivative thereof, thereby eliminating the stepnof introducing the ion exchange group to the graftednspecies. n The present invention is further directed to anmethod for treating a fluid comprising contacting a fluidnwith the ion exchange membrane of the present invention.nThe present invention is further directed to devicesnwhich comprise the membrane of the present invention. |
