titleOfInvention Energy absorbing force limiter device
abstract An energy absorbing force limiting system (SYLEC) consisting of a device that breaks evenly when compressed so that it limits the forces applied to a structure by a moving or accelerating mass, maintains a constant resistive force or one that obeys a selected law, and absorbs all or part of the kinetic energy. The device comprises a mechanical assembly (1-6) essentially consisting of a crushable element (1) made of woven composite materials and arranged between a fixed bearing (4) and a movable piston (3) connected to the source (6) of the force. One end of the crushable element (1) has a reduced compressive strength so that the break starts when the member is exposed to a force equal to the force required to continue the break. Said system is particularly suitable for motor vehicle seat belts.
