abstract A photographic element comprising a silver halide emulsion layernhaving associated therewith a 1-phenyl-3-anilino-4-benzotriazolyl-5-pyrazolonenmagenta dye-forming DIR coupler of structure I:n nwherein:n R 1 is hydrogen, chlorine, fluorine or a methyl group; R 2 , R 3 , and R 4 are individually selected from the group consisting ofnhydrogen, halogen, alkyl, phenyl, alkoxy, phenoxy, alkylthio, carbonamido,nsulfonamido, carbamoyl, alkoxycarbonyl and aryloxycarbonyl groups; R 5 is hydrogen, bromine, chlorine, fluorine, or an alkyl group; R 6 and R 7 are independently selected from the group consisting ofnhydrogen, halogen, carbonamido, carbamoyl, sulfonamido, sulfamoyl,naikylsulfonyl, arylsulfonyl, alkylsulfoxyl, arylsulfoxyl, sulfonyloxy,nalkoxycarbonyl, aryloxycarbonyl, acyloxy, acyl, imido, trifluoromethyl and cyanongroups, provided that at least one of R 6 and R 7 is not hydrogen; R 8 and R 9 are independently selected from the group consisting ofnhydrogen, halogen, alkyl, phenyl, alkoxy, phenoxy, alkoxycarbonyl, naryloxycarbonyl, carbonamido sulfonamido, carbamoyl and carbamoyloxy groups,nprovided that at least one of R 8 and R 9 is not hydrogen; further provided that (1) when R 5 is hydrogen, the sum of the Hammett snsigma values of R 6 and R 7 , referenced to the position of the anilino nitrogen, is atnleast 0.30, and R 1 is also hydrogen, and (2) when R 5 is bromine, chlorine, fluorine,nor an lakyl group, the sum of the Hammett sigma values of R 6 and R 7 , referencednto the position of the anilino nitrogen, is a least 0.20; and the sum of pi values of R 8 and R 9 taken together is at least 0.60 but notnmore than 3.00.
