abstract | A process for preparing polymers havingnquaternary ammonium groups, comprising polymerizing a vinylnmonomer component containing a vinyl monomer having antertiary amino group in the presence of a specificnsolvent, while quaternizing the tertiary amino group withna quaternizing agent, to produce the vinyl polymers havingnquaternary ammonium groups in the form of particlesndispersed in the solvent, wherein it is possible to easilynseparate the produced polymers having quaternary ammoniumngroups from the solvent without requiring a heating stepnfor removing the solvent, and wherein one can produce quaternarynammonium group-containing copolymers having a high contentnof a hydrophobic vinyl monomer. The quaternary ammoniumngroup-containing copolymers obtained by this process arenuseful as modifiers for plastics, permanent antistaticnagents, bactericides or fungicides, chemicals for papernmaking and water treating agents. |
