abstract | Provided is a liquid crystal display device of a TN typenwhich is improved on a display contrast, gray scalencharacteristics and viewing angle characteristics of a displayncolor. A liquid crystal cell of a TN type for drive is sandwichednby a pair of upper and lower polarizing plates and at least onencompensating film which has an extinction axis angle of 5 ton90 degrees as an absolute value and an optical rotating anglenof 0.5 to 10 degrees as an absolute value, wherein signs of thenextinction axis angle and the optical rotating angle arencontrary to each other, is inserted between the liquid crystalncell and the upper polarizing plate, or between the liquidncrystal cell and the lower polarizing plate, or at least twoncompensating films are respectively inserted between the liquidncrystal cell and the upper polarizing plate, and between thenliquid crystal cell and the lower polarizing plate, wherein anquasi fast axis vector of a compensating film and an easy axisnvector of an electrode substrate nearer the compensating filmnof the liquid crystal cell satisfy an angular relationntherebetween in the range of - 30 to + 30 degrees or + 150 ton+ 210 degrees. |
