abstract | Syndiotactic 1,2-polybutadiene is a thermoplasticnresin which has double bonds attached in annalternating fashion to its polymeric backbone. Films,nfibers and molded articles can be made utilizingnsyndiotactic 1,2-polybutadiene. It can also benblended into rubbers and cocured therewith. It isngenerally preferred to synthesize syndiotactic 1,2-polybutadienenin an aqueous medium by suspension ornemulsion polymerization. In such aqueousnpolymerization techniques reactor fouling and particlensize control problems are frequently encountered.nThis invention is based upon the unexpected findingnthat reactor fouling can be greatly reduced orneliminated and that particle size can be regulated bynconducting such aqueous polymerizations in thenpresence of a controlled amount of dissolved oxygennwhich is within the range of about 0.01 ppm to about 4nppm. This invention more specifically discloses anprocess for preparing syndiotactic 1,2-polybutadienenin an aqueous medium with minimal reactor foulingnwhich comprises polymerizing 1,3-butadiene monomer innthe aqueous medium in the presence of (1) a catalystnsystem which is comprised of (a) transition metalncompound, (b) an organoaluminum compound and (c) atnleast one member selected from the group consisting ofncarbon disulfide, phenyl isothiocyanate and xanthicnacid and (2) from about 0.01 ppm to about 4 ppm ofnoxygen. |
