abstract Particularly pure 5-nitro-isophthalic acid di-C 1 -C 4 -alkyl esters can be obtained in good yield and in a simple process by adding 5-nitro-isophthalic acid in a mixture of a C 1 -C 4 alkyl alcohol and a Water does not dissolve or only partially miscible solvent, heated in the presence of a strong acid, a second aqueous phase forming, after the esterification reaction from the organic phase has ended, the di-C 1 -C 4 -alkyl 5-nitro-isophthalate formed crystallized by cooling and the aqueous phase separated before or after the removal of the 5-nitro-isophthalic acid di-C 1 -C 4 alkyl ester.
